Preparing Your Yard For Fall And Winter

The later half of the year is also the busiest for most people, and the last thing you want to worry about as the holiday season rolls in is your lawn. If you have kids, they are going back to school soon and your entire family’s schedule becomes packed. During the fall you’ll be attending parties, shopping for gifts, and travelling to visit relatives.

Why spend your weekend working on outdoor projects when it becomes one of the only times you can get the whole family together? Remember, the weather is cooling off too and your yard will need to be prepared for colder temperatures (and you’ll want to be inside in the warmth!). Now is the perfect time to prep your yard for fall and winter. Here are a few things you’ll want to do:

Weed & Divide: If you had a lot planted for the summer, you’ll want to make sure you clean up your garden and get rid of any overgrown portions. Pull weeds, trim back leaves, and deadhead flowers that are beginning to die off.

Mow & Aerate: Continue to mow your yard regularly, but start to think about coring and fertilizing your yard to protect it over colder months and promote healthy growth the following spring.

Drain Water Features: Be sure to drain any water features in your yard, and consider moving smaller fountains inside. This will prevent damage from freezing and cooling and keep your feature in pristine condition!

Pool Prep: We know you’ll want to keep using your pool until the very last warm day of the year, but now is a good time to make sure you have all of the right materials to prepare your pool for winter. Check to make sure your items for drainage and cleaning are organized and ready to go!

Stay Warm: Consider getting an outdoor fireplace. An outdoor fireplace is a fast and easy way to have a fire with friends and family during the fall, and causes no damage to your yard compared to a fire pit. Now is a great time to add an outdoor fireplace so that it is ready for the first chilly night of the season!
