Caring for Artificial Turf in Cold Weather

Want a beautiful looking lawn all year long? Make the switch to artificial turf! Rather than looking out the window at a yard that has trampled, brown grass in the winter, homeowners who install artificial turf enjoy lush, green grass throughout the year. While artificial turf is nearly maintenance-free, giving your artificial turf a little extra TLC in the winter can ensure that it maintains its vibrant look. Here’s how:
Clear debris.
When leaves and sticks accumulate on your yard, remove them in a timely manner. Dirt and debris that are left for too long become a breeding ground for bacteria, which can impact their longevity of your turf. In addition, leaving debris on your artificial turf for an extended period can cause the blades to become matted down. Not only does this not look the best, but it can also have an impact on your yard’s drainage.
Allow snow and ice to melt naturally.
Should snow fall, the best bet to preserve your lawn is to let it melt on its own. While salt melts don’t typically damage the blades of grass on artificial turf, the residue can build-up at the base of the turf and can hinder your drainage. If shoveling is necessary, always use a plastic shovel and keep the shovel at least four inches from the artificial turf.
Keep off the grass when it’s frozen.
The grass blades of artificial turf can freeze in the winter just like real grass. When this happens, try your best to stay off the turf as much as possible. This will prevent the blades from breaking or becoming damaged. If you do walk on frozen artificial turf, tread with care!
Use a blade brush as needed.
If you notice that your artificial lawn is looking a little lackluster after snow or ice, a quick brush can spruce it right back up. Wait until the snow and ice has completely melted, then use a soft-bristles blade brush to gently move the blades back in to shape. As always, it’s important to use a brush designed specifically for artificial turf to avoid damage.
Check nails.
The cold winter weather can sometimes cause the nails that secure artificial turf to become loose. Periodically check your yard for gaps or areas where the turf seems loose to see if any nail heads have popped up from the base. If nails have come loose, use a hammer or mallet to put the back in place.
