Get Your Yard Ready for Winter
As winter approaches, there are several steps homeowners should take to prepare their yard for the colder weather. By taking the time to prepare your yard no
w, it will be in prime condition for you to enjoy it once the warm weather arrives. Follow these tips to winterize your outdoor space:
Prepare your patio and deck for cold weather. Remove leaves, dirt, and debris from the patio or deck. If left in place, moisture from frost and snow can cause these items to stain your outdoor space. Cover patio furniture and/or bring it inside for the winter. You should also cover the firepit and fireplaces. Gas firepits and fireplaces should be turned off during the winter months.
Inspect artificial grass. Artificial grass requires very little upkeep, especially in the winter months. Remove all debris from the yard and give it a final rinse for the season. You can also use this time to brush the turf to reinvigorate the blades that may have been beaten down after frequent use in the warmer months.
Protect outdoor lighting. If your landscaping or hardscaping includes outdoor lighting, check the wiring to ensure that it is not exposed. Wires get wet from snow or frost can become a safety hazard for the yard and home. Tighten all fixtures and replace any dead bulbs. For solar-powered lighting, wipe off the panels to ensure a clear nighttime view.
Winterize your water features. Fountains should be unplugged in the winter and drained of all water and covered to prevent cracking. Clean the water pump and store sensitive equipment inside. For ponds, remove leaves and debris and prune back surrounding plants, then clean the pump and filter. If you plan to leave the pond running during the winter, add a water heater or deicer to prevent freezing. Keep your fish friends safe by adding an aerator to provide oxygen.
