Choosing a Landscape Designer

After weeks, months, or even years of dreaming, you’ve finally decided to pull the trigger on your landscape project. Congratulations! Whether you’ve been dreaming of adding a patio to your home, upping the game on your curb appeal, or enhancing your outdoor atmosphere by adding a water feature, the first step in starting your project is an important one—choosing a landscape designer. Landscape designers vary in their skill sets, aesthetics, costs, and communication styles, among other aspects. To find the right designer for your job, ask the following questions:
Can I see examples of your past work?
You are likely to have an idea—if not a Pinterest board full of images—of what you’d like your landscape project to look like when it’s completed. To make sure the designer can deliver on your dreams, ask to see photos of their previous work. This way, you can see if their design aesthetic matches what you envision.Â
What is the design and installation process?
It’s best to know exactly what to expect from the design and installation process up front. How the designs will be shared with you, how many rounds of revisions are allowed, and what is the process for changes made mid-project? Similarly, ask for details on how the installation will take place—where the materials will be stored, how the team will access the project space, etc.Â
Can you work within my budget?
This question was likely already on your list, but it’s worth mentioning again. More than just asking about the cost of the project, dig a little deeper to see if there are any cost-saving measures that can be utilized for your project. In addition, ask about the terms for payment, such as how much is due upfront, midway, and at the end of the project.
What is your timeline for this project?
Get an idea of when the designer will be able to start on your project (spring is often a busy time for landscape designers), as well as how long the project will take from start to finish. Keep in mind that weather or special-order materials may delay your project.Â
How do you communicate with your clients?
Ask the landscape designer how they communicate with their clients—by phone, email, text, or in-person meetings. While this likely won’t be a make-or-break for choosing a landscape designer, knowing their communication style is helpful should you need to address issues during the project. Â
