Summer is a great opportunity to get outdoors, but often it’s just too hot! The good news is that a little shade can go a long way to make your backyard a more comfortable and enjoyable place to relax. There are many natural ways you can incorporate shade into your landscape so that you can make the most of the warm summer weather.

Shade Trees. One of the best ways to incorporate shade is to plant fast-growing shade trees, such as oak, maple, or birch. Start with a moderate-sized tree that will provide initial shade and watch over the years as the tree offers more and more substantial coverage. Pro tip: It’s important to consider the future size of the tree and plant it in an appropriate place; you don’t want branches too close to your house or tree roots breaking through your patio as the tree grows.

Ornamental Trees. If you are looking for a little bit of shade, perhaps the sun peaks through in an inconvenient spot, adding an ornamental tree can make a big difference. Plus, you won’t have to wait very long for them to grow. Ornamental trees that thrive in the Virginia Beach area include Eastern redbud, crepe myrtle, dogwood, and magnolia trees.

Hedges. Tall hedges aren’t just for separating yards; they can also be great sun blockers. For them to be effective, it’s important to plant them strategically. Track the sun's path to determine how tall your hedges need to be to provide adequate shade. Laurel and Leylandii hedges are good options that grow tall and have dense coverage.

Vertical Gardens. For smaller yards, a vertical garden can provide just the right amount of shade for a patio or deck. These can be made from pallets, wall-mounted planters, or trellis fencing. The structures and plants help to filter the sun and add a beautiful backdrop to your outdoor area.

Vines. Another effective option to increase the amount of shade in your backyard is to cover a pergola with vines. As the vines grow, they naturally weave together to provide a beautiful respite from the sun. They are most effective when you let them form a green roof over your pergola.

Don’t let the heat prevent you from enjoying your own backyard this summer. Take small steps now to block the sun, and plan ahead to ensure a shade-filled yard in the years to come.
